Anxiety

Anxiety is a mental health disorder defined by feelings of worry, anxiety, or fear that are so strong & intense enough that they interfere with one’s daily activities.

Anxiety & panic attacks strike suddenly & abruptly with intense waves of fear and worry along with the physical symptoms of shortness of breath, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, sweats, trembling, tightness of chest, shallow breathing & nausea just to name a few. Quite frankly you feel as if your dying…feel as if you are having a heart attack.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorder in America with over 40 million suffering.

I’m just one in those statistics that not only suffers from anxiety but from crippling anxiety attacks. Yet I often times feel very alone in my illness. It’s so much more than excessive worries & intrusive thoughts. It’s a real pain in my chest, a real lack to be able to properly breath, shakes, sweating, a real sense of being dizzy & about to pass out, headaches, fatigue….you name it. Then the aftermath of feeling stupid, worthless, that I’m simply overreacting.

Thankfully though in this day, anxiety is far less stigmatized & heard of more. In my opinion I feel a big part of this illness on the rise consists particularly due to how rushed and over competitive our society has become. The stress is simply unnatural. We are always being reminded we have to be faster, better, ect so we overload our plates. Force ourselves into becoming workaholics just to have a shot at being successful in this day & age.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about working hard & being productive. However that said, we need to take better care of ourselves & our minds so that we don’t let the stress corroded our health to the point that we can no longer be productive.

Coping mechanisms for me included many but absolutely nothing in world to combat my anxiety beats sleep. I mean I have to clear an entire day dedicated to resting & taking it easy & being gentle on myself. Typically my main anxiety attack trigger consists of obsessing over all the things I need to get done….. I obsess so much it literally obliterates my nerves. Clearing the day out & resting is the most important factor in healing my mind & myself.

Additional non medicinal options include;

Steam room, sauna, hot baths

Gentle yoga, specifically geared towards anxiety

Breath work – this doesn’t always clear an anxiety attack out but can work wonders in getting you through those horrible peak moments

Aromatherapy- Lavender, Rose, tea tree & eucalyptus are my favorite anxiety fighting oils.

Even with our children we must teach them to be cognizant of overloading themselves. For this very reason, my husband and I are adamant about our children only being allowed one extracurricular activity during the school year. We do multiple summer camp activities, but during the school year they are only allowed to choose one. So that they can focus their energy on their activity, school work, and finding time to relax & to just be kids. It’s normal for our children to want to do all the things but we must teach them it’s not healthy or feasible even to overload themselves. Remember that anxiety is just a serious to take care of as having a cold or any other infection

Your body needs rest, your mind & body need to heal! Be gentle to yourself.

You can have control or love but you can’t have both….

It’s a funny thing letting go of control. Control is such a strong comfort for so many. Often times due to the traumas & circumstances of our youth beyond our control in most cases . So we grow into adults who inadvertently hurt those closest to us, and find ourselves compelled to have control at all times. So that we may never have to go right back to feeling like that powerless child again. The thing about it is that often times the comfort of always being a creature of habit or in control at all times prevents …damn near blocks the ability to let true love and happiness into our soul.

Granted I get it it’s scary, frustrating even strange….yet at the same time that’s what love is suppose to be. It’s a life altering mind expanding emotion that has no room for cowardly hesitations. Ultimately we will have to choose whether we like it or not… You can have the control/ comfort that is derived from arrogance/ego/fear or you can let love overcome, immerse & transform you into that version of elusive happiness that you always wanted yet could never quite grasp.

The reason you could never grasp it is because you can’t have both.

Eventually you must choose control or the person…there is no other way. Also, to play games and to waste time will require you to loose that person and you will unfortunately have no one to blame for your own self made misery other than yourself

These thoughts have crept in and evolved for me individually with the lunar eclipse and full moon energy earlier in the week. It’s what this energy of the eclipses is all about. If you accept the harsh and tumultuous energy of the eclipse….you will come out for the better in the end…If you resist the energy out of fear…fear of lack of control…out of it being something different, you only do your soul more harm than good and will suffer more in the long run. So relax & go with the flow. Never let love pass you by due to fear or arrogance

The Eyes At Blenheim Palace

One of my favorite stories and places in England is the eyes of Blenheim Palace. The painting commissioned in 1928 by Gladys Deacon, the eccentric American woman who was the 2nd wife to the 9th Duke of Marlborough.

The painting was painted by the official war artist during WW1, Colin Gill.

No one really seems to know the meaning of the painting other than it is said to represent the brown eyes of the Duke and the blue ocean eyes of Gladys. She was said to have climbed a ladder to the artist with a scarf the specific shade of blue that matched her eyes that she wanted for the painting, and if that isn’t a romantic kick you in the side…… I don’t know what is. I find the eyes painting absolutely mesmerizing & hopelessly romantic.

Summer essential oils soaps

Dr Bronners soap is my jam. As it is so many others…it’s a best selling Castile soap that infused with the essential oils.

This little set I carried with me to the beach was pure perfection. I could interchange between the citrus oil one which would instantly lift my sprits & energize my essence. Then after a day on the beach where even with serious sun protection, my skin tends to feel a little crispy & in need of some calming TLC. I could refreshen up with the peppermint oil one for a soothing refresher before we would head out for evening adventures.

The peppermint oil soothes inflamed skin like no other. Its perfect for post sun activities weather you spend the day at the beach or pool even. It’s an invigorating & energizing oil. This oil is also great at relieving muscle pain. It’s known to be very soothing and calming to your skin.

The citrus is amazing as well because it practically smells of the sun. Its a real pep you up oil. This oil is also used as an antidepressant, anti inflammatory & aphrodisiac. Perfect vacation oil.

This soap can be used for just about anything and is equally environmentally friendly. It not only cleanses but is incredibly hydrating. In particular the hemp oil in these soaps has amazing anti aging properties. Namaste!

Home summer designs and Feng Shui

I try to keep things as simple as possible during the summertime. A couple of ferns in the pots and hanging from the porch add such a lush, fresh and simple touch. I also regardless of the time of year stay cognizant of the flow of energy in my surroundings. I am a big advocate of the principles of Feng Shui. The Chinese art and science that was formalized over 3,000 year ago. The practice of creating harmonious surroundings that enhances the balance of yin and yang. Simply put, how you decorate your house can dramatically affect the flow of good or bad energy in your household.

To start off with as I previously stated during the summer I typically always have ferns in my planters. Live leafy plants such as these are considered great energy. The color green alone represents life, fertility, and abundance. The only plants that are discouraged in the practice of Feng shui are spiky plants like cactus or artificial plants.

Entryways

My entryway essentials will always consists of a stylish shoe storage (because I loath people wearing shoes in my house), hooks for coats/bags/hats & whatnots, a charming key bowl, preferably a small mirror as well to check yourself on the way out and mail tray. Also mirrors in Feng shui are incredible powerful as they represent the water element. It is discouraged to have mirrors facing the front door, and having them framed in a color such as gold as I have here encourages wealth, abundance, warmth, and happiness.

Living room

Most of my house as you will note is accented with blues, brown, and wood elements. I tend to favor a decor with a blended mixture of traditional and industrial/farm house feel. I like the metal energies that usher in crisp clear, and dynamic energies into a space. This combined with the blues with has an energy of calming and peaceful qualities.

Fresh flowers are another essential in my house, I just so happened to have been blessed with an abundance of beautiful blue hydrangeas in the garden this year and was able to sprinkle them throughout.

The bar essentials will always consists of Gin & cucumber tonics. This as well added a little elderflower for the hell of it.

Desk

My desk work space again consists of the dynamic and fresh metal energies but I as well have a huge heirloom wood desk which just obviously radiates the wood elements of nurturing, growth, and stability. I as well accented with gold, for gold ushers in the wealthy, abundant energy.

Basement

It is a must to keep your basements tidy and orderly. This space is the foundation of your house and you will want the energy crisp and flowing properly.

The girls rooms

Now in my girls rooms I stick with white furniture. White beckons beginnings and fresh energy plus is a lovely pop against the greys that is usually the foundation in my children room. Grey promotes quiet and calming energy, again absolutely ideal in any children’s room. You can always accent with pinks and other colors as I have done in my ladies room.

I hope this piece leaves you all with a little bit of inspiration when you are considering the overall placement and flow of energies in your living spaces, and always Namaste!

Strawberry Shortcake Girls

Time is fleeting that is for sure. Lately I have been thinking quite a bit by how quickly my girls are growing. Nothing spectacular really…. in fact its a right of passage I suppose, something every parent goes through on a regular basis. Perhaps its because the strawberry fields near our house that we used to go to this time of year, when the girls were smaller recently closed.

I found myself glaring and reminanising over these photos of my girls at the same age strawberry picking. I remember both times were ridiculously stressful, hot & chaotic. Yet when I went over these pictures I found myself in astonishment at how perfect these moments were. These fleeting moments of my little angels babyhood perfectly captured in time.

Then I was struck by the relization that that is life in general. That is the point….. No matter where you are in life…. make sure to breath it in, absorb it…. absolutely relish in it. For it is a fast and fleeting moment like the light to a firefly, but it’s perfect and you will treasure that memory no matter how chaotic it may seem at the time. For it is a beautiful poetic chapter in the story that is your life. One you will read and reread often in your mind.

Below is the recipe of the fresh strawberry cake the girls and I would make each year with all our yummy freshly picked strawberries.

Fresh strawberry cake

  • Difficulty: average
  • Print

Cake ingredients;

  • White cake mix
  • strawberry jello pack
  • 1/4 C Avocado oil
  • 4 Large eggs
  • 1/2 C half & half
  • 1 C of chopped strawberries (frozen or fresh)

Butter cream ingredients;

  • 1/3 C soften butter
  • 3 C powdered sugar
  • 1 T vanilla
  • 2 T half & half
  • 1 C of fresh strawberries

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. I start by adding my half & half + strawberries (whole) into either a blender or food processor & blend it up just enough to chop up the strawberries. Next I mix up the strawberries & cream mixture, cake mix, jello pack, & oil. I used 6 inch pans for my cake, but you could easily modify your recipe for a full size cake or sheet cake for easy transport if needed. To prep my pans I typically grease and lightly flour the the pan and cut a circle of parchment paper to fit the bottom of the pan. Pour your batter half way up the pan.

Since I used 6 in round pans, I baked each layer of my cake for about 20 min each. Test to see if cake is done by inserting knife in the middle of the cake. If the knife is clean when you remove it, it is done. Remove cake from pan and cool on a cooling rack while you prepare your icing & get your second layer in the oven to as well bake for about 20 min.

While your first cake layer is cooling and your second layer is baking, you prep your strawberry buttercream icing. Mix up your butter and slowly add your powder sugar little at a time. Then add vanilla and half & half. Finally I add the roughly chopped strawberries. While I have the icing stiffening up in the refrigerator I then get the second layer out & cooling. When you are ready to ice the cake you put 1st layer down butt up as I like to call it. Place a dollop of icing and smooth out on top. Place your second layer on top of the icing and again place a dollop of icing on top and smooth on top. I then add a couple more dollops and start to smooth the icing to the sides and then smooth it out to the cakes sides and continue doing so until the sides are all covering with the icing in a rouch icing layer. Then I place the whole cake in the fridge to let the icing harden a bit for about 10 min. Afterwards I repeat the whole layering process again and add a fresh sliced strawberry on top.

Mothers Day

Some time its necessary….. Its absolutely essential. Do you make the time for you? Do you even remember who the you is? As a parent espcailly a mother…. We become lost…consumed in the everyday and the sacrifices as mothers we feel duty bound to make. Im not suggesting ton abandon your duties ladies or forget those beautiful souls who depend and love on us. Yet sometimes its important to remember the woman you are. Yesterday, for the first time in like 5 years I took time to finish a second cup of coffee out on my porch, then take a long bubble bath and after that take the time to do my yoga. I pushed myself to forget the guilt. The guilt of being the mom to hand the babies over to the dads. To think and actually enjoy myself first. After all are these not the qualities we wish to instill in our children? I want my girls to remember that being a mother doesn’t mean sacrificing the amazing woman you are & that they matter. They are valid. We must remember to be true to are essence & always set the proper example.

All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.
